A pick of the best penthouse apartments

Now a highly coveted feature of high rise residential developments across the world, penthouses first originated in 1920s New York as a response to demand for city living.

Defined as ‘an enclosed structure on or above the roof of any part of a building’, these impressive homes are usually the most luxurious space in any apartment block.

Whether part of a new build scheme or a historic building conversion, penthouses are designed to make the most of their top floor location, with spacious open plan interiors and far reaching views across the skyline.

They also tend to be the only apartment in the building with a large terrace, and, of course, there are no neighbours above.

From examples in Hertfordshire, Wiltshire and the Vale of Glamorgan, through to North Yorkshire, Dorset, Scotland and the Channel Islands – here’s a taste of penthouses available for buyers in search of the high life beyond London.
